The Cost of Applying and Getting Accepted Into Medical School

Getting into medical school entails a variety of costs, not the least of which is your four years of undergraduate education. But here are some additional costs to consider in your planning:

  • MCAT review courses: Self study to professional tutoring can range from $200 - $5000.
  • MCAT test fee: $315 for 2019 cycle.
  • AMCAS application fees: $170 for the application and one school selection; $39 for each additional school selected. Typical applicants currently send their AMCAS applications to an average of 15 schools.
  • Secondary application fees: Not all schools have secondary applications. Those that do will have fees that can range from $25 to $130 per school.

Interviewing: Travel costs can include gas, lodging, meals, and airline travel.

Acceptance deposits: M.D. schools can only ask for a $100 (refundable until April 30) deposit. Some Osteopathic (D.O.) schools ask for up to $3000 as a deposit, and most are non-refundable.

As you can see, the additional application costs can add up quickly. I recommend budgeting $3000-$5000 for each admissions application cycle.
